After a Japanese man shows up at Gokseong, a little town in the mountains of South Korea, a strange contamination breaks out and makes the residents become disturbed and savagely slaughter their families.
One night at the police headquarters, officials Oh Seong-bok and Jong-goo are examining the Japanese more abnormal when a stripped lady shows up in the downpour. They later find the lady, contaminated, has killed her family. At the wrongdoing scene, Jong-goo meets a baffling young lady called Moo-myeong ("no name" in Korean), who reveals to him the Japanese man is a phantom and the guilty party. Jong-goo ventures outside to call Oh Seong-bok, and the lady disappears. A nearby tracker reveals to them he saw the outsider with gleaming red eyes, eating a crude deer in the woodland.
Jong-goo has comparative longs for the outsider and chooses to research with Oh Seong-bok. They enroll the assistance of Oh Seong-bok's nephew, a Japanese-talking elder named Yang I-sam.
