In 1976, paranormal examiners Ed and Lorraine Warren explore the Amityville murders at the Amityville house, to decide whether a devilish presence was really liable for Ronald DeFeo Jr. slaughtering his whole family on November 13, 1974, and the resulting frequenting occurrence including the Lutz family. During a seance, Lorraine is brought into a dream where she remembers the killings. The soul of one of the murdered youngsters draws her to the storm cellar, where she experiences a satanic cloister adherent figure and witnesses Ed being pierced, alarming her. 

In 1977, the Hodgson family starts to encounter peculiar events in their home in the London suburb of Enfield after Janet, the second-most seasoned of four kids, plays with an ouija board she made with her companion Camilla. Janet begins to sleepwalk and banters in her fantasies with an element as an irate old man who sits in the family's rocker, demanding the house is his. At last, all the Hodgson kin and their mom Peggy witness paranormal occasions, frightening them into looking for shelter with their neighbors. When the media endeavors to meet the family, Janet is controlled by the old man, Bill Wilkins, who recently lived and passed on in the house. During the ownership, Wilkins expresses that he appreciates torturing the family and needs to recover his home. As Janet gives more indications of evil belonging, the story in the long run arrives at the Warrens, and their help is mentioned in an examination to demonstrate whether Janet's ownership is a deception. Lorraine, unfortunate that her vision of Ed's passing may become reality, cautions him not to get excessively included. She has one more vision of the evil religious woman in Ed's examination. The evil spirit says its name, which Lorraine writes in her Bible. 

While remaining at the Hodgson home, Ed and Lorraine counsel other paranormal examiners, including Maurice Grosse and Anita Gregory, on the authenticity of the case. They endeavor to speak with Wilkins' soul, wanting to persuade him to quit frequenting the family. One evening, Gregory presents video proof of Janet destroying the kitchen deliberately as though for a trick, in this manner ruining the frequenting. In light of this, Ed and Lorraine choose to leave, accepting the family is lying for notoriety. Notwithstanding, they find that the soul of Wilkins is just a pawn being controlled by the devilish cloister adherent, to frequent Janet and break her will. Lorraine understands that her capacities have been hindered by the cloister adherent, keeping her from getting a handle on the reality of Janet's ownership. 

Ed and Lorraine rapidly re-visitation of the Hodgson home, just to discover Janet had and the remainder of the Hodgsons bolted outside the house. Ed adventures inside alone and discovers Janet at the window, prepared to end it all. He figures out how to get Janet as expected, yet is near falling. Lightning strikes the tree in the front yard, transforming it into the item that spears Ed in Lorraine's vision. Lorraine discovers her Bible in which she composed the evil spirit's name – Valak. She tends to the devil by its name, effectively sentencing it back to Hell. Janet is liberated of its ownership, and Lorraine pulls her and Ed to security. 

In the wake of getting back, Ed adds a thing to his and Lorraine's assortment – a spooky "Slanted Man" zoetrope toy possessed by Peggy's most youthful youngster Billy – putting it alongside April's music confine and front of the Annabelle doll.
